New Bird and Winter Trees

Hello there! I hope all is well! I want to let my US East Coast friends and anyone in the heart of winter storm territory that I am praying for the safety of you all and for the blizzard to pass as soon as possible with as little damage as possible. Stay safe my sweet friends! Ok, now keeping along the lines of winter is my fifth and final project as an official guest designer for Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft. What a wonderful journey it has been for me to be a part of such a stellar company and team of designers! I'm sad it's ending but equally excited to see their next set of guest designers and for myself and what doors God will open for me next! This is a 9x11" canvas panel (if you know me, you know I love these) with a wintery scene and my version of a new bird, mixed media style! I found a very cool and easy new technique on the Deep Space Sparkle website, for a kid's project nonetheless and I'm super stoked to share it with you! It's SO easy to create these trees, which remind me of white birch trees. It's up over at the Design Memory Craft blog and I have it here too.

I really loved creating this one and here's how it came together. I started by laying down 6 shades of Gelatos® on watercolor paper then spritzed with water and blended with my fingers. This will be the bird.

 While that dried, I painted a layer of Gesso over my canvas panel.

For the trees, I cut 2 strips of white cardstock the length of the canvas then took Chalkboard Paint to the edge of a plastic card, pulling the color from one side and adding lines for a cool tree-like effect. It was so fun to watch the trees come alive with just a few swipes of black and white paint--I'll be using this one again!

Next, I colored the entire background with Snow Cone Gelatos® Double Scoop® then blended it with my finger.

Now I came back to the trees and added a wash of Gesso over some areas to create more interest and texture. I think they look a bit like a White Birch tree which I like for a winter scene!

Next, I cut out my bird parts and arranged them out on the canvas with the trees, then adhered everything down with a layer of Gel Medium.

I added random branches and my bird's eye with the Bold/Black PITT® Artist Pen

Finally, I added highlights with the Coconut Gelatos® Double Scoop®
